Why this applies to Atazanavir

Atazanavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bog Labrador Tea interacts with.

In vitro research shows that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Bog Labrador tea leaves can increase the concentration of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Extracts obtained from different geographical regions in Quebec resulted in differing potency of CYP3A4 induction. Bog Labrador tea might increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), amiodarone (Cordarone), ticagrelor (Brilinta), triazolam (Halcion), and others.

Here's the gist for your HIV medication. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to process atazanavir (Reyataz). Lab studies suggest Bog Labrador tea may rev up that enzyme, which could speed up how fast your body clears the drug. In plain terms, that might lower the amount of atazanavir in your blood.

Why that matters: atazanavir is not a prodrug, so less drug means weaker effect. With HIV treatment, even small drops in drug levels can let the virus rebound or build resistance, and that's serious. Keep in mind this is based only on test-tube research, so it's a theoretical concern, not proven in people. Still, I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or HIV provider before mixing the two.

Bog Labrador tea is a wetland shrub whose leaves have long been brewed as a traditional beverage and folk remedy, especially among Indigenous peoples of North America. There is very little human research to confirm any health benefit, and the plant is closely related to species that contain toxic compounds, so it should be used cautiously and in moderation. Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it, and anyone considering it should talk with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Atazanavir

What Is Atazanavir Used For?

Brand name: Reyataz

Atazanavir capsules are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children 6 years and older who weigh at least 15 kg (about 33 lbs).

Reyataz — available as capsules and as an oral powder — is also approved for HIV-1 treatment in adults and in children as young as 3 months who weigh at least 5 kg (about 11 lbs). Reyataz oral powder must always be taken with ritonavir and food, and is not for use in children weighing less than 5 kg.
