Why this applies to Selinexor

Selinexor falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bog Labrador Tea interacts with.

In vitro research shows that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Bog Labrador tea leaves can increase the concentration of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Extracts obtained from different geographical regions in Quebec resulted in differing potency of CYP3A4 induction. Bog Labrador tea might increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), amiodarone (Cordarone), ticagrelor (Brilinta), triazolam (Halcion), and others.

Here's the thing to know about Selinexor (Xpovio): your liver processes it partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab studies, Bog Labrador tea appears to speed up that enzyme, which could make your body clear selinexor faster than intended. Since selinexor isn't a prodrug, faster clearance means there could be less of the drug working against your cancer, and you don't want anything quietly weakening a treatment for multiple myeloma or lymphoma.

I'll be honest though, this is based only on test-tube research, not on real patients, so we can't say how big a deal it would be in practice. Still, with a serious cancer medicine, I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before drinking this tea.

Bog Labrador tea is a wetland shrub whose leaves have long been brewed as a traditional beverage and folk remedy, especially among Indigenous peoples of North America. There is very little human research to confirm any health benefit, and the plant is closely related to species that contain toxic compounds, so it should be used cautiously and in moderation. Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it, and anyone considering it should talk with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Selinexor Used For?

Brand name: Xpovio

Xpovio (selinexor) is used to treat multiple myeloma in adults. When used together with bortezomib and dexamethasone, it is for adults who have had at least one prior treatment. This combination is sometimes called XVd.

Xpovio is also used with dexamethasone alone (called Xd) for adults with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma — meaning the cancer came back or stopped responding — who have already tried at least four prior therapies and whose disease no longer responds to several other standard drug types.
