Drug & supplement interaction

Brewer's Yeast + Deferiprone

Deferiprone brand name: Ferriprox.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Brewer's Yeast and Deferiprone in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Deferiprone states a food rule worth keeping to, and the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Brewer's Yeast and Deferiprone

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Deferiprone and Brewer's Yeast in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Brewer's Yeast safety at a glance

Brewer's Yeast overall Use caution Generally well tolerated in food amounts, but it can cause gas and may not be safe for people with weakened immune systems or certain conditions.
Pregnancy Use caution Likely fine in normal food amounts, but the safety of concentrated supplements during pregnancy is not well studied, so check with your provider.
Breastfeeding Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but there is not enough information on supplement doses, so use caution and ask your provider.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Deferiprone

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Deferiprone is filed under a single classification — oral drugs. Brewer's Yeast has documented interactions with 4 drug classes — the most serious being monoamine oxidase inhibitors (maois) (major), antidiabetes drugs (moderate) and lithium (moderate) — and none of Deferiprone’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Brewer's Yeast and Deferiprone May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

Reported for Brewer's Yeast but not commonly for Deferiprone: an allergic reaction, chest pain, a severe allergic reaction and bloating or gas.

Effects for Deferiprone come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Brewer's Yeast come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 3,004 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Deferiprone that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

How to take them

Some Deferiprone Products Have a Food Rule — Brewer's Yeast Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Deferiprone says to take it with food. If you take Brewer's Yeast on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Deferiprone with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Deferiprone products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Deferiprone

This page covers Brewer's Yeast only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Deferiprone page lists 17 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Coffee Charcoal (moderate), European Mandrake (moderate), Glucomannan (moderate) and Guar Gum (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 7 moderate · 9 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Deferiprone page

“Deferiprone (Ferriprox) pulls excess iron out of the body in conditions like thalassemia, and that job depends on the pill actually being absorbed. Every one of the 17 supplements flagged against it threatens that step, which is why this list warrants real vigilance rather than a shrug.”

About Brewer's Yeast

What is Brewer's Yeast?

Brewer's Yeast
  • Source of B vitamins
  • Diarrhea (certain types)
  • Cold and flu support
  • Digestive health
  • Acne and skin health
  • Blood sugar support

Brewer's yeast is a nutrient-rich fungus that provides B vitamins, protein, and minerals, and a related yeast product (S. boulardii) is used for some types of diarrhea. Most other health claims have limited or weak evidence. It is generally well tolerated as a food or supplement, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it regularly, especially if you have a weakened immune system.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Brewer's Yeast is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Brewer's Yeast record says about it on its own.

Brewer's Yeast: dosing

There is no single official or proven dose for brewer's yeast. Products vary widely in their form (tablets, powder, flakes) and in how much yeast they contain. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and start with a lower amount to see how your stomach handles it. They can help you decide whether it is appropriate and whether a different, better-studied product (such as a specific probiotic) might be a better fit.

About Deferiprone

What Is Deferiprone Used For?

Brand name: Ferriprox

Deferiprone is used to remove excess iron that builds up in the body from repeated blood transfusions — a condition called transfusional iron overload. Too much iron in the body can damage organs over time, so deferiprone works to capture and remove it.

Ferriprox oral solution is approved for adults and children 3 years and older with thalassemia syndromes, sickle cell disease, or other anemias. Ferriprox tablets are approved for adults and children 8 years and older with the same conditions. Deferiprone tablets (generic) are approved for adult patients with thalassemia syndromes when their current iron-removal treatment is not working well enough.

Most-Reported Side Effects for Deferiprone

Is it safe to take Brewer's Yeast with Deferiprone?

Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 2 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. If you take Brewer's Yeast on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate and take Deferiprone with a meal where the label says to. Food instructions belong to the product rather than the ingredient — two Deferiprone products can differ — so check the directions on your own box. This is about absorption, not an interaction.
How was the Brewer's Yeast and Deferiprone combination checked?

Deferiprone is filed under 1 classification, and Brewer's Yeast has documented interactions with 4 drug classes — none of Deferiprone's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
