Here's the gist for anyone taking Januvia (sitagliptin) who's curious about brewer's yeast. Brewer's yeast naturally contains chromium, and some studies suggest that chromium may help nudge blood sugar a little lower. Stack that on top of sitagliptin, which already works to bring high blood sugar down, and the two together could lower your numbers a bit more than expected.

On its own, sitagliptin rarely causes low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), so this is usually a mild concern. But if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea like glipizide, watch a little more closely for shakiness, sweating, or feeling lightheaded. Food amounts of yeast are unlikely to matter, but if you want to use a daily supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Sitagliptin Used For?

Sitagliptin is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is available as tablets (Januvia, Zituvio, and generic sitagliptin products) and as an oral solution (Brynovin), all approved for this same use.

Sitagliptin is not for type 1 diabetes. It has not been studied in people with a history of pancreatitis, so its safety in that group is unknown.
