Brewer's Yeast and Empagliflozin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Empagliflozin

Empagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Brewer's Yeast interacts with.

Taking brewer's yeast with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that taking chromium-containing brewer's yeast can decrease levels of blood glucose in diabetic patients being treated with antidiabetes drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: brewer's yeast naturally contains chromium, and some research suggests chromium can help lower blood sugar on its own. So when you pair it with empagliflozin (Jardiance), which is already working to bring your glucose down, the two together may push your numbers a little lower than expected.

This isn't about the yeast changing how your body breaks down the drug. It's more of an additive effect on blood sugar. Watch for signs of low blood sugar, like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling unusually tired. The evidence here is modest, and a sprinkle of yeast in food is unlikely to matter much. Concentrated daily supplements are more likely to add up. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it regularly, and keep an eye on your readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Empagliflozin page

“Almost everything on this page can nudge blood sugar in someone taking empagliflozin (Jardiance) for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, or kidney protection, and two entries deserve genuine caution before anything else. Siberian cocklebur has caused severe low blood sugar in humans and should not be combined with any glucose-lowering medi…”

About Empagliflozin

What Is Empagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Jardiance

Jardiance (empagliflozin) tablets are approved for several important uses in adults. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure. It also slows the progression of chronic kidney disease by reducing the risk of serious kidney decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization. In adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, Jardiance reduces the risk of cardiovascular death.

Jardiance is also used — alongside diet and exercise — to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 and older. It is not recommended for blood sugar control in type 1 diabetes (it may raise the risk of a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis) or in type 2 diabetes patients with severely reduced kidney function.
