Brewer's Yeast and Natamycin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIFUNGALS

Why this applies to Natamycin

Natamycin falls under ANTIFUNGALS — the group Brewer's Yeast interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antifungals with some brewer's yeast products might decrease the effectiveness of brewer's yeast.
Some brewer's yeast products contain live yeast. Therefore, simultaneously taking antifungals might kill a significant number of the organisms.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the key thing to know: this interaction runs the opposite way from what most people worry about. It isn't that brewer's yeast changes how Natamycin works. Instead, Natamycin (Natacyn) is an antifungal, and some brewer's yeast supplements contain live yeast organisms. Taking them together could kill off some of that live yeast, making the supplement less effective. Natamycin itself stays just as useful.

Honestly, this is mostly a non-issue for the eye drops form of Natamycin, since very little gets into the rest of your body to reach yeast in your gut. It's also theoretical, based on how the drug works rather than real cases. If you take brewer's yeast for a specific reason, just space it out and check with your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Natamycin page

“This list deserves real attention, even though natamycin (Natacyn) is an antifungal most often given as an eye drop for fungal eye infections. Of the 20 supplements and herbs on file, one rates major, and it is activated charcoal, which can pull many medicines out of the body and lower their levels no matter how a drug is given.”
