Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Ropivacaine
Ropivacaine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Broccoli Sprout interacts with.
Animal research shows that broccoli sprout extract can increase CYP1A2 gene expression. Also, pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that eating 500 grams of fresh broccoli daily for 6-12 days can increase CYP1A2 activity by 10% to 200%. Induction of CYP1A2 activity by broccoli is attributed to glucosinolate constituents, which are also found in broccoli sprout.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for ropivacaine (Naropin). It's a local anesthetic, the kind given as an injection or infusion for surgery, labor, or nerve blocks. Your liver partly clears it using an enzyme called CYP1A2. Broccoli sprouts may gently nudge that enzyme to work faster, which in theory could lower ropivacaine levels and shorten or weaken the numbing effect.
In real life, this is barely a concern. The interaction is theoretical and rated minor. Ropivacaine is almost always dosed and watched by an anesthesia team in a hospital or clinic, so they can adjust as needed. Eating broccoli sprouts as food won't realistically matter. If you take concentrated sprout supplements, just mention it to your doctor or pharmacist before any procedure.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ropivacaine page
“Fever bark stands apart on this page. It carries the only major rating among the 85 supplements and herbs on file for ropivacaine (Naropin), the numbing medicine used in epidurals and nerve blocks, because reserpine, one of its compounds, has been tied to unstable blood pressure and heart function during general anesthesia.”

About Broccoli Sprout
What is Broccoli Sprout?
- Antioxidant support
- Detoxification support
- General heart health
- Anti-inflammatory support
- Digestive and gut health
Broccoli sprouts are young broccoli seedlings rich in a compound called sulforaphane, which is being studied for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification effects. Early research is promising for some uses, but high-quality human evidence is still limited, so they should be viewed as a healthy food rather than a proven treatment. As food they are generally safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
