Your Capozide already does two things to lower blood pressure: the captopril relaxes your blood vessels, and the hydrochlorothiazide (the water pill) pulls extra fluid and salt out through your urine. Here's the concern with calamus. In animal studies, it slowed the heart and softened how hard it beats, which can nudge blood pressure down too. Stacked on top of your medicine, that might push your pressure lower than intended.

If that happened, you could feel dizzy, lightheaded, or unusually tired, especially when you stand up quickly. To be clear, this is theoretical and based only on animal data, not proven in people. Even so, calamus carries its own safety worries, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

What Is Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Capozide, Acezide

Captopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The two ingredients work together to lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone.

This combination may be started as initial therapy or substituted when a patient has already been adjusted on both ingredients separately. It is approved for patients with normal kidney function, and is used more cautiously in those with impaired kidney function.
