Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: codeine is already a calming, drowsy-making medicine. It's an opioid pain reliever, and on its own it can make you feel sleepy, foggy, slowed down, or even slow your breathing if you take too much. California poppy is thought to have its own mild calming effect, so the worry is that stacking the two together could pile on the drowsiness, leaving you more sedated, dizzy, or sluggish than you'd expect.

That said, the evidence here is thin. This caution comes mostly from lab and animal studies, not real people, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, because two sedating things together can add up, I'd play it safe. Mention both to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't drive until you know how you feel.

  • Mild aches and pains
  • Restlessness or nervous tension
  • Bedwetting in children (traditional use)

California poppy is a traditional herbal remedy used mainly for anxiety and sleep problems, often combined with other calming herbs.
