Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Nelarabine
Nelarabine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group California Poppy interacts with.
Laboratory research shows that California poppy has sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about nelarabine (Atriance): it's a chemotherapy drug, and one of its well-known side effects is on the nervous system. People can feel drowsy, sleepy, dizzy, or mentally foggy while on it. California poppy is a calming herb that, at least in lab and animal studies, seems to have its own mild sedative or relaxing effect.
So the concern here is simple overlap. Stacking a calming herb on top of a drug that already causes drowsiness could leave you feeling more sleepy or unsteady than usual. This is theoretical and based on weak evidence, not proven in people, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, given how strong nelarabine's nervous-system effects can be, please run California poppy by your oncology team before using it.
