Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with Duavee (conjugated estrogens plus bazedoxifene) and carob. Carob is rich in tannins and fiber, and lab work suggests it can bind to things in your gut and slow their absorption. The worry is theoretical: if you took your Duavee and a concentrated carob preparation at the same moment, the carob might grab onto some of the medicine before your body absorbs it, which could in theory make it work a little less well for your hot flashes or bone protection.

The good news is this is very weak evidence, just lab and animal data, and a small amount of carob in food is unlikely to matter. To play it safe, you can separate them, taking carob about 30 to 60 minutes after your Duavee. Run it by your pharmacist if you use carob regularly.

It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. What Is Estrogen and Bazedoxifene Used For?

Brand name: Duavee

  • Estrogen and bazedoxifene tablets are used to treat hot flashes (sudden feelings of warmth, especially in the face, neck, and chest) in women who are experiencing menopause (stage of life when menstrual periods become less frequent and stop and women may experience other symptoms and body changes). Estrogen and bazedoxifene tablets are also used to prevent osteoporosis (condition in which the bones become thin and weak and break easily) in women who have undergone menopause. Estrogen is in a class of medications called hormones and bazedoxifene is in a class of medications called estrogen agonist–antagonists. Estrogen works by replacing estrogen that is normally produced by the body. Bazedoxifene is used to block the action of estrogen on the lining of the uterus, decreasing the risk of overgrowth that may lead to cancer.
