Here's the simple version: carob is full of fiber and tannins, and those can grab onto things in your gut and slow how well they get absorbed. With daprodustat (Jesduvroq), a pill you take to treat anemia from chronic kidney disease, the worry is that eating a lot of carob around the same time could blunt how much medicine your body takes in. If less gets absorbed, the drug may work less well, meaning your anemia might not improve as expected.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab and food studies, not on real-world reports with this exact drug. To be safe, a little spacing helps. Take your daprodustat first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before having carob. If you have questions, your pharmacist or doctor can help.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

What Is Daprodustat Used For?

Brand name: Jesduvroq

Jesduvroq (daprodustat) is approved to treat anemia due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults who have been on dialysis for at least four months. It works by stimulating the body's own red blood cell production to reduce the need for blood transfusions.

Important limits: Jesduvroq is not a substitute for emergency blood transfusions, and it is not approved for people with CKD who are not on dialysis. It has also not been shown to improve quality of life, fatigue, or overall well-being.
