Why this applies to Daprodustat

Daprodustat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C8 (CYP2C8) SUBSTRATES — the group Quercetin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C8 substrates.

In vitro research shows that quercetin inhibits CYP2C8. Inhibition of paclitaxel (Taxol) metabolism via CYP2C8 has been reported in vitro. However, a small study in humans found no effect of quercetin on rosiglitazone (Avandia), which is also a CYP2C8 substrate.

Here's the gist: daprodustat (Jesduvroq) is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP2C8. In test-tube studies, quercetin can slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, your daprodustat could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which in theory could push its effects higher. With this medicine, that mostly means your red blood cell count and hemoglobin could climb more than intended, and overshooting raises the risk of high blood pressure or blood clots.

I want to keep this in perspective though. This is theoretical, based only on lab work, and a human study with a similar drug showed no real effect. Food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to matter. Before starting a high-dose supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Daprodustat Used For?

Brand name: Jesduvroq

Jesduvroq (daprodustat) is approved to treat anemia due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults who have been on dialysis for at least four months. It works by stimulating the body's own red blood cell production to reduce the need for blood transfusions.

Important limits: Jesduvroq is not a substitute for emergency blood transfusions, and it is not approved for people with CKD who are not on dialysis. It has also not been shown to improve quality of life, fatigue, or overall well-being.
