Why this applies to Daprodustat

Daprodustat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C8 (CYP2C8) SUBSTRATES — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Breadfruit might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 2C8 (CYP2C8) enzymes. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, in vitro evidence shows that the breadfruit constituent artocarpin inhibits CYP2C8 enzymes, which might increase the levels of CYP2C8 substrates. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C8 include amiodarone (Cardarone), paclitaxel (Taxol); nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren) and ibuprofen (Motrin), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the basic idea with breadfruit and daprodustat (Jesduvroq), the medicine used to treat anemia in people with chronic kidney disease. Daprodustat is cleared from your body largely by a liver enzyme called CYP2C8. In a lab setting, a compound in breadfruit (artocarpin) appears to slow that enzyme down. If it did the same thing in people, daprodustat could clear more slowly and build up, which in theory could push your red blood cell production too high or raise the risk of side effects.

The important caveat: this is only test-tube evidence and has never been seen in actual patients. Eating breadfruit as a food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger unknown. Since daprodustat needs careful monitoring anyway, just let your pharmacist or doctor know before using any breadfruit products.

What Is Daprodustat Used For?

Brand name: Jesduvroq

Jesduvroq (daprodustat) is approved to treat anemia due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults who have been on dialysis for at least four months. It works by stimulating the body's own red blood cell production to reduce the need for blood transfusions.

Important limits: Jesduvroq is not a substitute for emergency blood transfusions, and it is not approved for people with CKD who are not on dialysis. It has also not been shown to improve quality of life, fatigue, or overall well-being.
