ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Enalapril Maleate
Enalapril Maleate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: enalapril (Vasotec) already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Breadfruit leaf products may nudge things in the same direction. In animal studies, breadfruit leaf extract slowed the heart rate and softened how hard the heart muscle squeezes, which can drop blood pressure a bit further. Stack that on top of enalapril and the two could add up.
If your pressure drops too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or wobbly when you stand up fast. I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical and based only on animal data, so it's not a sure thing. Eating breadfruit as a regular food is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger question, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Enalapril Maleate page
“Potassium is the supplement I worry about first with enalapril maleate (Vasotec, Epaned). This ACE inhibitor, used for high blood pressure and heart failure, already makes the body hold onto potassium, so adding more can raise blood levels too far, a problem called hyperkalemia.”

About Breadfruit
What is Breadfruit?
- Source of nutrition and energy
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes and blood sugar support
- Inflammation and joint discomfort
- Skin conditions
Breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit eaten as a staple food, and its leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. As a food it is nutritious and generally safe, but the medicinal use of leaf teas or extracts has very little human research to back it up. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products for a health condition.
About Enalapril
What Is Enalapril Used For?
Brand names: Vasotec, Epaned
Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children older than one month, and to treat symptomatic heart failure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.
It is also used for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction — when the heart's pumping ability is reduced but the person doesn't yet have obvious heart failure symptoms — to slow the progression to overt heart failure and reduce hospitalizations. Enalapril maleate oral solution (including Epaned) and enalapril maleate tablets (including Vasotec) share these three approved uses.
