Breadfruit and Acebutolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Acebutolol

Acebutolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension. Animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can decrease heart rate and weaken the force of heart muscle contractions, which may lower blood pressure.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: acebutolol already lowers your blood pressure and slows your heart rate. Concentrated breadfruit leaf products (think teas or extracts, not the fruit on your dinner plate) may push in the same direction. In animal studies, breadfruit leaf extract slowed the heart and weakened how hard it pumped, so stacking it on top of your beta blocker could add up.

If your blood pressure or pulse dips too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, unusually tired, or notice a slow heartbeat. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not real human studies. Eating breadfruit as food is very unlikely to matter. If you're thinking about leaf teas or supplements, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Acebutolol page

“Acebutolol (Sectral) lowers blood pressure and slows the heart, so the eight major-rated interactions on this list of 173 supplements deserve real attention. Most of the entries, well over a hundred, either stack on its blood-pressure-lowering effect and drop you too low, or push the other way and let your pressure climb back up.”

About Breadfruit

What is Breadfruit?

  • Source of nutrition and energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes and blood sugar support
  • Inflammation and joint discomfort
  • Skin conditions

Breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit eaten as a staple food, and its leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. As a food it is nutritious and generally safe, but the medicinal use of leaf teas or extracts has very little human research to back it up. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products for a health condition.

About Acebutolol

What Is Acebutolol Used For?

Brand names: Sectral, Rhotral

Acebutolol Hydrochloride capsules are used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. They can be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medications, particularly thiazide-type diuretics.

They are also used to treat ventricular premature beats — extra, out-of-rhythm heartbeats that originate in the lower chambers of the heart. Acebutolol reduces how often these abnormal beats occur, including complex patterns that can be more concerning.
