Why this applies to Iloprost

Iloprost falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension. Animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can decrease heart rate and weaken the force of heart muscle contractions, which may lower blood pressure.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the gist for iloprost (Ventavis). Iloprost is a vasodilator, meaning it widens blood vessels and lowers blood pressure on purpose to help your lungs. Breadfruit leaf products may push in the same direction. In animal studies, breadfruit leaf extract slowed the heart rate and lowered blood pressure, so stacking it on top of iloprost could add up and drop your pressure too much.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, flushed, or faint, especially when standing up, along with headache or a fast heartbeat. Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not human studies, and eating breadfruit as food is unlikely to matter. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger question, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using them.

Iloprost also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, concomitant use with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. In vitro research shows that certain flavonoid constituents from breadfruit root extract can inhibit thromboxane formation and reduce platelet aggregation.
Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's something worth knowing about iloprost (Ventavis): besides relaxing the blood vessels in your lungs, it also makes your platelets a little less sticky, so it gently nudges your blood toward thinner. Breadfruit may do something similar. In lab studies (test tube only, not people), certain flavonoids from breadfruit root were able to slow platelet clumping. Stacked together, the worry is a bit more bleeding risk, things like easier bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.

Keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology, and eating breadfruit as a food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated leaf or root extracts are the real question mark. Before adding any breadfruit supplement, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Aurlumyn (iloprost injection) is FDA-approved to treat severe frostbite in adults. Specifically, it is used to reduce the risk of losing fingers or toes (digit amputation) after serious frostbite injury. The clinical evidence supporting this use comes from young, healthy adults who suffered frostbite at high altitudes.
