Breadfruit and Acetaminophen, Methocarbamol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Methocarbamol

Acetaminophen, Methocarbamol falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Breadfruit might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by uridine diphosphoglucuronosyl transferase (UGT). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, in vitro evidence shows that the breadfruit constituent artocarpin inhibits UGT. Theoretically, this could decrease the clearance and increase levels of glucuronidated drugs. Some drugs that are metabolized through glucuronide conjugation include acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) and oxazepam (Serax), haloperidol (Haldol), lamotrigine (Lamictal), morphine (MS Contin, Roxanol), zidovudine (AZT, Retrovir), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical side for your Robaxacet. The acetaminophen part of this combo gets cleared from your body partly through a process called glucuronidation (handled by UGT enzymes). A lab compound found in breadfruit, called artocarpin, can slow those enzymes down. In theory, that could let acetaminophen build up a bit more than usual, which matters because too much acetaminophen is hard on the liver.

Now, the honest part: this has only been seen in test-tube studies, never in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Eating breadfruit as a food is very unlikely to cause a problem. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger unknown. If you're using those regularly, just give your pharmacist a heads-up before mixing them with Robaxacet.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.

About Breadfruit

What is Breadfruit?

  • Source of nutrition and energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes and blood sugar support
  • Inflammation and joint discomfort
  • Skin conditions

Breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit eaten as a staple food, and its leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. As a food it is nutritious and generally safe, but the medicinal use of leaf teas or extracts has very little human research to back it up. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products for a health condition.
