Why this applies to Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine

Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. In vitro research shows that certain flavonoid constituents from breadfruit root extract can inhibit thromboxane formation and reduce platelet aggregation.
Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the short version for Fiorinal (aspirin, butalbital, and caffeine): the part that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already thins the blood a little by blocking platelets from clumping together. In lab studies, certain compounds from breadfruit appear to do something similar, nudging platelets to stick less and slowing one of the body's clotting signals.

So in theory, pairing concentrated breadfruit leaf products with this medicine could add to aspirin's blood-thinning effect and raise your chance of bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach irritation and bleeding. I want to be honest though: this is based only on test-tube research, not real patients, so it's a theoretical concern. Eating breadfruit as food is very unlikely to matter. If you're using leaf teas or extracts, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, breadfruit might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes; until more is known, use with caution. In vitro, the breadfruit constituent artocarpin can inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. Also, animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can weakly inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. However, it is unclear if this inhibitory activity causes a clinically meaningful effect on the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone), sertraline (Zoloft), and many others.

Here's the short version: eating breadfruit as food is very unlikely to cause any trouble with your Fiorinal (aspirin, butalbital, caffeine). The concern on file is purely theoretical. In lab dishes and animal studies, a breadfruit compound weakly slowed down an enzyme called CYP3A4. The butalbital part of your medication leans on this enzyme to be cleared, so in theory a strong blocker could let it linger a bit longer and add to drowsiness, grogginess, or lightheadedness.

That said, this is based on test-tube and animal work only, not real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over a serving of breadfruit. If you're using concentrated breadfruit leaf teas or extracts regularly, just give your pharmacist a heads-up so we can keep an eye on things.

What Is Aspirin, Butalbital, and Caffeine Used For?

Brand name: Fiorinal

Butalbital, aspirin, and caffeine capsules are used to relieve the symptom complex of tension headache — also called muscle contraction headache. This includes headache pain, psychic tension, and muscle tightness in the head, neck, and shoulders.

This medicine is intended for short-term use. Evidence supporting its safety and effectiveness for repeated or long-term use in recurrent headaches is not available, and extended use is not recommended because butalbital can be habit-forming.
