Losartan Potassium falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension. Animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can decrease heart rate and weaken the force of heart muscle contractions, which may lower blood pressure.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: losartan (Cozaar) lowers your blood pressure, and concentrated breadfruit leaf products may nudge it down a little further. In animal studies, breadfruit leaf extract slowed the heart rate and weakened how hard the heart squeezed, which can drop blood pressure. Stacked on top of losartan, that could mean feeling dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or woozy when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though: this is theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not solid human studies. Eating breadfruit as a food is very unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger question is medicinal leaf teas or extracts. Before trying those, check with your pharmacist or doctor, and don't change your losartan on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Losartan Potassium also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, breadfruit might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes; until more is known, use with caution. In vitro, the breadfruit constituent artocarpin can inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. Also, animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can weakly inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. However, it is unclear if this inhibitory activity causes a clinically meaningful effect on the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone), sertraline (Zoloft), and many others.

Here's something worth knowing about losartan: it's actually a prodrug. Your liver uses enzymes (mainly CYP2C9, with some CYP3A4 help) to convert it into its more active form, which does much of the blood-pressure-lowering work. So if breadfruit slowed down those enzymes, the theory would be slightly less of the active form, not more, meaning losartan could work a touch less well.

The honest truth, though, is that this is very weak, lab-and-animal-only evidence rated as minor. Eating breadfruit as food almost certainly won't affect your losartan. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger unknown. If you're using those for blood pressure or diabetes, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
