Why this applies to Ramipril

Ramipril falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension. Animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can decrease heart rate and weaken the force of heart muscle contractions, which may lower blood pressure.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the gist: ramipril already lowers your blood pressure, and breadfruit leaf products may nudge it down a little further. Animal studies suggest breadfruit leaf extract can slow the heart rate and soften how hard the heart squeezes, which can drop blood pressure. Stack that on top of ramipril and you could feel dizzy or lightheaded, get a headache, or feel faint when standing up quickly.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern is theoretical and comes from lab and animal work, not human studies, so the real-world risk is uncertain. Eating breadfruit as a regular food is unlikely to be a problem; concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger question. If you're considering those, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Ramipril Used For?

Brand name: Altace

Ramipril capsules are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either alone or combined with a thiazide diuretic (water pill). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke.

In adults 55 and older at high cardiovascular risk, ramipril capsules are used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes. Ramipril capsules are also used in stable patients who develop signs of heart failure within the first days after a heart attack, to lower the risk of death and hospitalization related to heart failure.
