Breadfruit and Ammonium Chloride

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Ammonium Chloride

Ammonium Chloride falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension. Animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can decrease heart rate and weaken the force of heart muscle contractions, which may lower blood pressure.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's something worth clearing up. Our database files ammonium chloride under blood pressure medicines, but that's a loose fit. Ammonium chloride is mostly used as a urinary acidifier and sometimes to help correct certain salt or acid imbalances in the body. It isn't really a blood pressure drug in the way amlodipine or lisinopril are.

The interaction on file is theoretical, drawn only from animal studies where breadfruit leaf extract slowed heart rate and lowered blood pressure a bit. So if you happened to be taking ammonium chloride for blood pressure related reasons, there's a small, unproven chance of feeling dizzy or lightheaded. Eating breadfruit as food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger unknown. Please run your specific situation by your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ammonium Chloride page

“Ammonium chloride, an old drug still used to acidify the urine and correct certain acid-base imbalances, sits in caution territory in my read of this page. Most of the interactions on file involve supplements that push blood pressure up or down or that compound the fluid and potassium shifts tied to its use, and a smaller set can chang…”

About Breadfruit

What is Breadfruit?

  • Source of nutrition and energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes and blood sugar support
  • Inflammation and joint discomfort
  • Skin conditions

Breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit eaten as a staple food, and its leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. As a food it is nutritious and generally safe, but the medicinal use of leaf teas or extracts has very little human research to back it up. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products for a health condition.
