Breadfruit + Amlodipine Besylate
Amlodipine Besylate brand name: Norvasc.
Amlodipine Besylate falls into 2 drug categories that Breadfruit can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Breadfruit interacts with whole categories of medication. Amlodipine Besylate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Breadfruit in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Amlodipine Besylate
Amlodipine Besylate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: amlodipine already does the work of relaxing your blood vessels and lowering your blood pressure. Breadfruit leaf products may push in the same direction. In animal studies, breadfruit leaf extract slowed the heart rate a bit and softened how hard the heart muscle squeezed, which can nudge blood pressure down. Stack that on top of your amlodipine and the two could add up.
If they do, you might feel more lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or notice swelling in your ankles. Now, I want to be honest with you, this is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal work, not solid human studies. Eating breadfruit as food is very unlikely to matter. The bigger question mark is concentrated leaf teas or extracts. Before trying those, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Amlodipine Besylate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone), sertraline (Zoloft), and many others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with amlodipine (Norvasc): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medication down. Concentrated breadfruit leaf products (teas or extracts) might gently slow that enzyme, which could let amlodipine build up a little more than usual. If that happened, you'd be looking at amlodipine's typical effects getting stronger, things like dizziness, flushing, headache, or swelling in the ankles.
That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is only a theoretical concern based on lab and animal studies, not real people, and it's rated minor. Eating breadfruit as a regular food is very unlikely to matter. If you're thinking about using leaf extracts for blood pressure or sugar, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Breadfruit
What is Breadfruit?
- Source of nutrition and energy
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes and blood sugar support
- Inflammation and joint discomfort
- Skin conditions
Breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit eaten as a staple food, and its leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. As a food it is nutritious and generally safe, but the medicinal use of leaf teas or extracts has very little human research to back it up. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products for a health condition.
About Amlodipine
What Is Amlodipine Used For?
Brand name: Norvasc
Amlodipine lowers high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or with other blood pressure or angina medicines.
It is also used for chronic stable angina, vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina), and angiographically documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or an ejection fraction below 40%. The Sdamlo oral solution label lists the high blood pressure use for adults and children 6 years and older, and the coronary artery disease uses for adults.
