Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Here's the gist for ramipril and theanine. Ramipril is a blood pressure medicine, and theanine, the calming amino acid found in tea, may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Put them together and there's a chance theanine could add to ramipril's effect, nudging your numbers a little lower than expected.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern comes only from animal studies, so it's largely theoretical and the real-world effect in people is likely small. If you do take both, just watch for signs your pressure dropped too far, like dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, or feeling unusually tired. Nothing to panic over, but it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding theanine.

What Is Ramipril Used For?

Ramipril capsules are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either alone or combined with a thiazide diuretic (water pill). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke.

In adults 55 and older at high cardiovascular risk, ramipril capsules are used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes. Ramipril capsules are also used in stable patients who develop signs of heart failure within the first days after a heart attack, to lower the risk of death and hospitalization related to heart failure.
