Losartan Potassium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the wrinkle with losartan (Cozaar): it's actually a prodrug. Your liver uses enzymes, including CYP3A4, to convert it into its more powerful active form. So if atractylodes slows down CYP3A4, the theory would be that less of losartan gets activated, which could mean a slightly weaker blood-pressure-lowering effect. In plain terms, your numbers might creep up a bit rather than your pressure dropping too low.

Now, the reassuring part: this is only seen in lab and animal studies, at high doses, and it has not been shown in people. It's rated a minor, theoretical concern. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but if you take both regularly, keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings and let your pharmacist or doctor know what you're using.

Atractylodes is a root used for centuries in traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Thai medicine, mostly for digestive complaints and fatigue, often as part of multi-herb formulas. Modern research is still early and mostly from lab and animal studies, so its true benefits in people are not well proven. If you want to try it, talk with a pharmacist or doctor first, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
