Breadfruit and Chlorothiazide, Methyldopa

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Chlorothiazide, Methyldopa

Chlorothiazide, Methyldopa falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension. Animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can decrease heart rate and weaken the force of heart muscle contractions, which may lower blood pressure.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Aldoclor combines two blood pressure lowering medicines: chlorothiazide (a water pill) and methyldopa (which relaxes your blood vessels through the brain). Both already work to bring your pressure down, so the concern here is simply piling on more of the same effect.

Here's the honest part: this interaction is theoretical and comes only from animal studies suggesting breadfruit leaf extract may slow the heart and lower blood pressure a little. Eating breadfruit as a food almost certainly won't cause trouble. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger question mark. If you used them together, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially standing up. There's no strong human proof, so don't panic, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before trying any breadfruit leaf product.

About Breadfruit

What is Breadfruit?

  • Source of nutrition and energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes and blood sugar support
  • Inflammation and joint discomfort
  • Skin conditions

Breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit eaten as a staple food, and its leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. As a food it is nutritious and generally safe, but the medicinal use of leaf teas or extracts has very little human research to back it up. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products for a health condition.
