Daprodustat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C8 (CYP2C8) SUBSTRATES — the group Licorice interacts with.

Theoretically, licorice might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C8.
In vitro, licorice extract from the species G. glabra and G. uralensis inhibits CYP2C8 isoenzymes. Theoretically, these species of licorice might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C8; however, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Jesduvroq (daprodustat), the pill that helps your body make more red blood cells when kidney disease causes anemia. Your liver clears daprodustat mainly through an enzyme called CYP2C8. In lab tests (test tubes only, not people), certain licorice extracts slowed that same enzyme down. If that happened in the body, daprodustat could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which in theory might nudge your effect and side effects higher (things like raised blood pressure or, rarely, blood clots).

I want to be honest: this is theoretical and has not been seen in real patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since licorice itself can raise blood pressure, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Licorice root is a traditional remedy used for sore throats, coughs, and digestive complaints, but solid human evidence is limited for most uses. Regular licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure and lower potassium when taken in large amounts or for a long time, so deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) products are often preferred. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems.

What Is Daprodustat Used For?

Brand name: Jesduvroq

Jesduvroq (daprodustat) is approved to treat anemia due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults who have been on dialysis for at least four months. It works by stimulating the body's own red blood cell production to reduce the need for blood transfusions.

Important limits: Jesduvroq is not a substitute for emergency blood transfusions, and it is not approved for people with CKD who are not on dialysis. It has also not been shown to improve quality of life, fatigue, or overall well-being.
