Tizanidine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Licorice interacts with.

Theoretically, licorice might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.

Here's the gist for tizanidine (Zanaflex): your body relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear this muscle relaxant. The concern on file is that licorice might speed that enzyme up a bit. If it does, tizanidine could be broken down a little faster, which in theory means it may not relax your muscles as well, and you might notice your spasms or stiffness creeping back.

Honestly, this one is very much a maybe. It comes only from lab dish studies, not from real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Occasional culinary licorice is unlikely to matter. If you take licorice supplements regularly and feel your tizanidine isn't working as well, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Licorice root is a traditional remedy used for sore throats, coughs, and digestive complaints, but solid human evidence is limited for most uses. Regular licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure and lower potassium when taken in large amounts or for a long time, so deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) products are often preferred. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems.

What Is Tizanidine Used For?

Brand names: Zanaflex, Ontralfy

Tizanidine — available as tablets, capsules, and as the oral solution Ontralfy — is used to manage spasticity (abnormal muscle stiffness or spasms). Because it works for a relatively short window of time, it is typically scheduled around the activities when spasm relief matters most.

Ontralfy (oral solution) and Zanaflex capsules are specifically indicated for the treatment of spasticity in adults. Other tizanidine tablets and capsules are indicated for the management of spasticity more broadly.
