Here's the gist for licorice and triamcinolone. Triamcinolone is a corticosteroid (it works on its own, not a prodrug). Lab studies suggest licorice can rev up a transport protein called P-glycoprotein, which acts like a pump moving certain drugs out of your gut cells. In theory, that could mean a bit less triamcinolone gets absorbed, which might slightly weaken its effect on inflammation, swelling, or your allergy or asthma symptoms.

I want to be honest though: this is based only on test-tube and animal research, so it's quite theoretical. There's a bigger reason to be careful, though. Both licorice (the glycyrrhizin kind) and steroids can lower potassium and raise blood pressure. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

Theoretically, concomitant use of licorice and corticosteroids might increase the side effects of corticosteroids.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of licorice and oral corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone, can potentiate the duration of activity and increase blood levels of corticosteroids. Additionally, in one case report, a patient with neurogenic orthostatic hypertension stabilized on fludrocortisone 0.1 mg twice daily developed pseudohyperaldosteronism after recent consumption of large amounts of black licorice.

Here's the gist for triamcinolone, which is a corticosteroid. Licorice (specifically the glycyrrhizin in regular, non-DGL products) can slow how your body clears steroids, so the medicine may linger longer and hit a little harder than expected. With triamcinolone that could mean more of the usual steroid side effects, like fluid buildup, higher blood pressure, low potassium, mood or sleep changes, and higher blood sugar.

I'll be honest, this is based on a few case reports and theory, not strong studies, so it's more of a 'be aware' than a 'panic.' Small amounts of licorice flavoring in food likely don't matter much, but daily licorice candy or concentrated supplements are the real concern. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you already have blood pressure, heart, or kidney issues.

Licorice root is a traditional remedy used for sore throats, coughs, and digestive complaints, but solid human evidence is limited for most uses. Regular licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure and lower potassium when taken in large amounts or for a long time, so deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) products are often preferred. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems.

What Is Triamcinolone Used For?

Brand names: Aristocort, Kenacort, Adcortyl Intra-articular / Intradermal, Kenalog Intra-articular / Intramuscular, Adcortyl in Orabase, Triesence

Triamcinolone is available in many forms — injections, creams, ointments, nasal sprays, dental pastes, and eye injections — each approved for specific uses. Injectable forms given into muscle are used when oral steroids aren't an option, covering severe allergies (like asthma flares, severe skin reactions, drug reactions, and serum sickness), serious skin diseases, certain endocrine (hormonal) disorders, and more.

Injections given directly into a joint (intra-articular) or soft tissue help with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, gout flares, bursitis, and tendon inflammation. Injections into skin lesions (intralesional) treat conditions such as keloids, alopecia areata, and psoriatic plaques. Triesence (an ophthalmic injection) is specifically indicated for eye conditions like uveitis and temporal arteritis, and for visualization during eye surgery. Topical creams, ointments, lotions, and sprays relieve itching and inflammation from corticosteroid-responsive skin conditions. Dental paste forms (Oralone, Kourzeq) treat painful mouth sores from injury. Nasal sprays temporarily relieve hay fever and upper respiratory allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and congestion.
