Riluzole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Licorice interacts with.

Theoretically, licorice might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that licorice induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

Here's the simple version for riluzole. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear this medicine. Lab studies suggest licorice may speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in real life, your body could break down riluzole a little faster, which in theory might make it slightly less effective at protecting your nerves. Riluzole is not a prodrug, so faster clearance means less drug, not more.

I want to be honest about how soft this is: it comes only from test-tube research, not from people, and it's rated minor. So I wouldn't panic. Still, because riluzole matters so much in ALS, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding licorice, especially concentrated supplements rather than small food amounts.

Licorice root is a traditional remedy used for sore throats, coughs, and digestive complaints, but solid human evidence is limited for most uses. Regular licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure and lower potassium when taken in large amounts or for a long time, so deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) products are often preferred. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
