Here's the gist for propafenone (Rythmol). Lab studies hint that licorice may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways that helps clear propafenone. If your body clears it a little faster, the medicine's blood levels could drift down, and propafenone is an active drug (not a prodrug), so lower levels might mean it controls your irregular heartbeat less well.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube data, rated minor, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger worry is that regular licorice can raise blood pressure and drop potassium, and low potassium can itself trigger heart rhythm problems. With a heart medicine like this, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using licorice.

Licorice root is a traditional remedy used for sore throats, coughs, and digestive complaints, but solid human evidence is limited for most uses. Regular licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure and lower potassium when taken in large amounts or for a long time, so deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) products are often preferred. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems.

About Propafenone

What Is Propafenone Used For?

Brand names: Rythmol, Arythmol

Propafenone is used to help control abnormal heart rhythms. It is prescribed to delay the return of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (episodic irregular heartbeats in the upper chambers) and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT, sudden fast heartbeats starting above the heart's lower chambers) — but only in people who do not have structural heart disease.

It is also used to treat life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias (dangerous fast rhythms starting in the heart's lower chambers). Because of serious safety concerns, it is not recommended for minor or non-life-threatening heart rhythm problems.
