Here's the idea with Talzenna (talazoparib) and licorice. Talazoparib is carried in and out of your gut cells by a pump called P-glycoprotein. Lab studies (test tube only, not people) suggest licorice may speed that pump up, which could push a little more of the drug back out before it gets absorbed. In theory, that might mean slightly less talazoparib in your system and a weaker effect against your breast cancer.

I want to be honest: this is theoretical and based only on lab work, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since talazoparib is a serious cancer medicine where steady levels matter, please don't add a licorice supplement without first checking with your oncology team or pharmacist.

Licorice root is a traditional remedy used for sore throats, coughs, and digestive complaints, but solid human evidence is limited for most uses. Regular licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure and lower potassium when taken in large amounts or for a long time, so deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) products are often preferred. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems.

Talazoparib (sold as Talzenna) treats two kinds of cancer in adults. Both depend on specific gene changes found through testing.

  • Breast cancer: used alone for HER2-negative locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer with a harmful or suspected harmful inherited (germline) BRCA mutation.
  • Prostate cancer: used together with enzalutamide for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) with a mutation in an HRR gene (a DNA repair gene).
