Here's the gist with carob and your losartan (Cozaar): carob is full of fiber and tannins, and lab studies suggest those compounds can grab onto things in your gut and slow how well they're absorbed. The worry is mostly theoretical and rated as minor, so a little carob in a snack or smoothie isn't likely to throw off your blood pressure control.

Still, if carob bound up some of your losartan, you might absorb a touch less, which in theory could make it work a bit weaker. An easy fix is timing: take your losartan first, then enjoy carob about 30 to 60 minutes later. If you use carob in larger, concentrated amounts, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
