Here's the deal with carob and orlistat (Alli, Xenical). Carob is packed with fiber and tannins, and those can grab onto things in your gut and slow down how well some swallowed medicines get absorbed. With orlistat, this is really just a theoretical concern based on lab work, not strong human studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Honestly, orlistat works right in your intestines to block fat absorption, so it isn't a pill that needs deep absorption to do its job. The practical move is simple: just space them out, taking carob about 30 to 60 minutes after your orlistat dose. If you use carob heavily as a supplement, mention it to your pharmacist so they can double-check.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

What Is Orlistat Used For?

Brand names: Xenical, Alli

Xenical and prescription-strength orlistat are approved to help obese adults lose weight and keep it off when used with a reduced-calorie diet. They are intended for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher if other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or dyslipidemia (abnormal cholesterol or fat levels in the blood) are present.

Alli is the over-the-counter version, approved for weight loss in overweight adults 18 and older when used with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and exercise program.
