First things first: I really don't want you taking European mandrake at all. It's a toxic nightshade plant with no proven benefit, and it can cause serious harm. With that said, here's the idea behind this particular interaction. Mandrake's tropane alkaloids (atropine-like compounds) slow down how fast your gut moves things along. The theory is that when food and pills sit in your intestines longer, your body may absorb a bit more of certain drugs.

For orlistat specifically, this is mostly theoretical and based on pharmacology, not solid studies. Orlistat works right in your gut to block fat absorption, so any extra side effects would likely be its usual ones: oily or loose stools, gas, and urgent trips to the bathroom. Please run any supplement past your pharmacist or doctor before mixing it with orlistat.

What Is Orlistat Used For?

Brand names: Xenical, Alli

Xenical and prescription-strength orlistat are approved to help obese adults lose weight and keep it off when used with a reduced-calorie diet. They are intended for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher if other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or dyslipidemia (abnormal cholesterol or fat levels in the blood) are present.

Alli is the over-the-counter version, approved for weight loss in overweight adults 18 and older when used with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and exercise program.
