Simvastatin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cat's Claw interacts with.

Theoretically, cat's claw might increase or decrease the levels and effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Cat's claw may affect the clearance of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. In vitro research shows that cat's claw can inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. In one case report, a patient taking cat's claw (at an unspecified dose) experienced increased serum levels of atazanavir, ritonavir, and saquinavir, all of which are CYP3A4 substrates. Levels returned to normal 15 days after discontinuation of the cat's claw supplement, suggesting inhibition of CYP3A4 by cat's claw. In contrast, animal research suggests that rhynchophylline, an alkaloid contained in cat's claw, induces CYP3A expression and accelerates the metabolism of nirmatrelvir, the active component in the nirmatrelvir/ritonavir combination product.

Here's the gist: your body clears simvastatin (Zocor) using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Cat's claw may slow that same enzyme down, at least based on lab studies. If it does, more simvastatin could hang around in your blood than expected, which can nudge up the risk of statin side effects like muscle aches, weakness, or, rarely, more serious muscle problems.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is mostly test-tube and animal data, plus a single case report involving other drugs, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven one. Some animal work even hints cat's claw could speed metabolism up instead. Before combining them, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up so they can keep an eye on you.

About Simvastatin

What Is Simvastatin Used For?

Brand name: Zocor

Simvastatin tablets are used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to treat high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides, and certain inherited cholesterol disorders, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) in adults and children aged 10 and older, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) in adults.

In adults who already have coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, or diabetes and are at high risk for heart events, simvastatin is also used to reduce the risk of death from heart disease, non-fatal heart attack, stroke, and the need for procedures to open blocked arteries. Zocor is one brand-name product containing simvastatin and carries these same indications.
