Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Saxagliptin, metformin XR

Theoretically, chicory might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal and in vitro research shows that chicory extracts have antidiabetic effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: chicory might gently nudge your blood sugar a little lower on its own. In lab and animal studies, chicory extracts showed some blood-sugar-lowering activity. Since your Kombiglyze (saxagliptin plus metformin XR) is already working to bring your numbers down, stacking the two could, in theory, lower your sugar a bit more than expected.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology, not strong human proof, so for most people it's not a big deal. Still, keep an eye out for signs of low blood sugar like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy, especially if you take a lot of concentrated chicory or inulin supplements. A little chicory coffee is unlikely to matter. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding supplements.

About Chicory

What is Chicory?

Chicory
  • Constipation and digestive health
  • Source of prebiotic fiber (inulin)
  • Coffee substitute
  • Liver and gallbladder support
  • Appetite and blood sugar (traditional)

Chicory is best known as a caffeine-free coffee substitute and as a source of inulin, a soluble prebiotic fiber that may support digestion and regularity. Strong human evidence for most other traditional uses (like liver, gallbladder, or skin conditions) is limited. It is generally well tolerated, but the inulin can cause gas and bloating, and people allergic to ragweed or related plants should be cautious.
