ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Canagliflozin, Metformin
Canagliflozin, Metformin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Clove interacts with.
Clinical and laboratory research suggest that polyphenol extracts from clove flower buds might lower blood glucose levels. Dosing adjustments for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents may be necessary when taken with clove. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Invokamet pairs two diabetes medicines, canagliflozin and metformin, that both work to bring your blood sugar down. The concern here is simple: lab and early research hints that concentrated clove extracts may also nudge blood sugar lower. Stack that effect on top of your medication, and in theory your numbers could dip too far.
If that happened, you might feel shaky, sweaty, lightheaded, irritable, or unusually tired, the classic signs of low blood sugar. I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical interaction based on how clove behaves, not strong human proof. Sprinkling clove on food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated clove oil or supplements are the real question. If you want to use those, check your sugars more closely and talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

“Invokamet combines canagliflozin and metformin, two medicines that lower blood sugar by different routes, so nearly everything here, 239 of the 257 ingredients on file, touches glucose control in one direction or the other. Most add their own sugar-lowering effect and can stack with the drug to drop blood sugar too far, while a few pus…”

About Clove
What is Clove?
- Toothache and oral pain
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial and antifungal
- Cough and respiratory complaints
- Flavoring in food and drinks
Clove is a common cooking spice that is also used in traditional medicine, especially as a topical numbing agent for tooth pain thanks to its main compound, eugenol. Food amounts are generally safe, but concentrated clove oil and supplements can be irritating or toxic if overused, and human evidence for most health claims is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using clove medicinally, especially in children or during pregnancy.
