Why this applies to Morphine Sulfate

Morphine Sulfate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Clove interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP2D6 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the honest picture with clove and morphine. The concern on file is that eugenol, the main oil in clove, may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. But this matters far less for morphine than people assume, because morphine isn't mainly cleared by CYP2D6. It's handled largely by a different pathway (glucuronidation), so blocking CYP2D6 wouldn't be expected to make morphine pile up much.

On top of that, this enzyme effect was only seen in a test tube, never in actual people, and it would take concentrated clove oil or supplements, not the pinch you cook with. Still, since morphine is a strong opioid where extra sedation or slowed breathing is dangerous, run any concentrated clove product past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Morphine is used to manage acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) pain that is severe enough to need an opioid and that hasn't been adequately treated by other options. The higher-concentration liquid form is reserved for adults who are already opioid-tolerant — meaning their body is used to opioid medications.

Because of real risks of addiction, misuse, and overdose, morphine is only prescribed when other pain treatments have not worked or are not expected to work. It is not intended for long-term use unless the pain continues to be severe and no alternatives are suitable.
