Why this applies to Maprotiline

Maprotiline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Clove interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP2D6 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear maprotiline out of your system. Lab studies suggest that eugenol, the main compound in clove, can slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in people, maprotiline could build up a bit higher than expected, which may mean stronger effects and more side effects like drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This has only been seen in test-tube research, never confirmed in actual patients, so it's mostly theoretical. The clove in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated clove oil or supplements are where I'd be more cautious. Before using clove medicinally with maprotiline, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.
