ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Amoxapine
Amoxapine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like activated charcoal in your gut. Its porous surface can grab onto medications you swallow, including amoxapine, before your body has a chance to absorb them. If they're sitting in your stomach at the same time, less of your antidepressant may actually get into your bloodstream.
Why does that matter? If you absorb too little, your amoxapine may not work as well, and over time your depression symptoms could creep back. The fix is usually about timing, not stopping anything. Keeping these at least two hours apart is the general advice. This concern is based on how charcoal behaves rather than firm studies, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amoxapine page
“Amoxapine (Asendin) is an older tricyclic antidepressant, and its supplement list deserves real care. Three of the 68 ingredients on file are rated major: activated charcoal can soak up the drug before your body gets it, lithium raises the risk of serotonin syndrome (a dangerous serotonin overload), and scopolia piles onto amoxapine's…”

About Coffee Charcoal
What is Coffee Charcoal?
- Diarrhea
- Inflammatory bowel conditions
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Mild digestive upset
- Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)
Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
