Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like other charcoals in your gut. Its porous surface can grab onto medicines you swallow and keep some of them from being absorbed. With Xywav (your calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium oxybate), that could mean less of the dose actually reaches your bloodstream, so you might not get the full benefit. In real life, that could look like more daytime sleepiness or cataplexy episodes breaking through.

This concern is theoretical, based on how charcoal behaves, not on direct studies with Xywav. The easy fix is timing: keep coffee charcoal and your Xywav dose at least two hours apart. Since Xywav is dosed at night, please run your routine by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.

About Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium Oxybate

What Is Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium Oxybate Used For?

Brand name: Xywav

Xywav is approved to treat two conditions. First, it treats cataplexy (sudden muscle weakness triggered by emotion) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in patients aged 7 and older who have narcolepsy. Second, it treats idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) — a condition causing severe, persistent sleepiness with no identifiable cause — in adults.

Both uses are specific to Xywav as an oral solution. The active ingredient, oxybate (also known as GHB), works during sleep to help regulate wakefulness and muscle control.
