The dendrobium constituent dendrobine is reported to have convulsant effects. Theoretically, combining dendrobium with pro-convulsant drugs might increase the risk of seizure. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the gist of pairing Dendrobium with Xywav (the calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium oxybate combo). One of Dendrobium's natural compounds, an alkaloid called dendrobine, has been reported to act as a convulsant, meaning it may make seizures a little easier to trigger. Xywav can also lower the seizure threshold in some people, so stacking the two together could, in theory, raise that risk a bit.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology, not real-world case reports, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, since Xywav is a powerful central nervous system depressant, it's worth running this combination past your pharmacist or doctor before adding Dendrobium rather than deciding on your own.

What Is Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium Oxybate Used For?

Brand name: Xywav

Xywav (calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium oxybate) is approved to treat two symptoms of narcolepsy — cataplexy (sudden muscle weakness triggered by emotion) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) — in patients 7 years of age and older.

Xywav is also approved to treat idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) — a sleep disorder that causes excessive sleepiness even after long periods of sleep — in adults.
