Nifedipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Dendrobium interacts with.

The dendrobium constituent dendrobine is reported to have hypotensive effects. Theoretically, combining dendrobium with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension; use with caution.

Here's the gist with nifedipine and Dendrobium. Nifedipine already works by relaxing your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure down. Dendrobium contains a compound called dendrobine that, at least in lab and animal work, may lower blood pressure too. So the worry is simply additive: two things nudging your pressure in the same direction.

If your blood pressure drops too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or flushed, especially when you stand up quickly. That said, this is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology, not strong human studies, and it's rated minor. I wouldn't panic, but it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Dendrobium, and keep an eye on how you feel.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
