SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS
Why this applies to Calcium Oxybate, Magnesium Oxybate, Potassium Oxybate, Sodium Oxybate
Calcium Oxybate, Magnesium Oxybate, Potassium Oxybate, Sodium Oxybate falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Biofeedback interacts with.
Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Let me put this one in plain terms. Xywav (the mixed oxybate salts you take for narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnia) can lower the brain's seizure threshold a little. There's also a theory that one specific type of biofeedback, EEG (brainwave) biofeedback, might nudge that threshold lower too in certain people. Stack the two and, in theory, the chance of a seizure could go up slightly.
I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern with limited evidence, and most folks doing relaxation, heart rate, or muscle-tension biofeedback aren't affected at all. The other Xywav cautions, like deep sedation, slowed breathing, dizziness, and bedwetting, are the bigger day-to-day issues. Still, if you're considering EEG-based biofeedback, mention your Xywav to your doctor or pharmacist first so they can weigh it for you.

About Biofeedback
What is Biofeedback?
- Chronic pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Anxiety and stress
- High blood pressure
- Urinary incontinence
- Tension and muscle relaxation
Biofeedback is a mind-body technique, not an herb or supplement. It uses sensors to show you real-time information about body functions like heart rate, muscle tension, or skin temperature so you can learn to control them. It is generally very safe and has reasonable evidence for headaches, certain pain conditions, and pelvic floor problems, but it works best alongside standard medical care.
About Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium Oxybate
What Is Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium Oxybate Used For?
Brand name: Xywav
Xywav (calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium oxybate) is approved to treat two symptoms of narcolepsy — cataplexy (sudden muscle weakness triggered by emotion) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) — in patients 7 years of age and older.
Xywav is also approved to treat idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) — a sleep disorder that causes excessive sleepiness even after long periods of sleep — in adults.
