ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Cefadroxil
Cefadroxil falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts like a sponge in your gut. Because it has that porous, charcoal-like surface, it can grab onto things passing through, including your cefadroxil antibiotic. If they're sitting in your stomach at the same time, less of the antibiotic gets absorbed into your bloodstream.
Why does that matter? Cefadroxil only works if enough of it actually reaches the infection. Soak up part of the dose and you could end up underdosing, which may mean your skin, throat, or urinary infection doesn't clear the way it should. The fix is easy: keep them apart by at least two hours. This is based on how charcoal behaves rather than firm studies, but separating the doses is a smart, low-effort safeguard. Run your timing past your pharmacist to be sure.

About Coffee Charcoal
What is Coffee Charcoal?
- Diarrhea
- Inflammatory bowel conditions
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Mild digestive upset
- Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)
Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
About Cefadroxil
What Is Cefadroxil Used For?
Brand names: Duricef, Ultracef, Cef-Tab
Cefadroxil treats bacterial infections caused by susceptible (antibiotic-sensitive) germs. It is approved for urinary tract infections, skin and skin structure infections, and pharyngitis or tonsillitis caused by Group A strep (Streptococcus pyogenes).
It should only be used for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it. Taking it for viruses (like a cold or flu) will not work and contributes to antibiotic resistance.
