Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like activated charcoal in your gut. Its porous surface can grab onto things you swallow, and that may include your crizotinib (Xalkori) capsule. If the charcoal soaks up some of the drug before your body absorbs it, less of it gets into your bloodstream, which could weaken how well it controls your cancer. That matters a lot with a targeted therapy like this one.

To be fair, this concern is based on how charcoal behaves in general, not on a specific study with crizotinib. Still, with a cancer medicine you don't want to gamble on absorption. The easy fix is spacing: keep them at least two hours apart. Please run this by your oncologist or pharmacist before combining them.

About Crizotinib

What Is Crizotinib Used For?

Brand name: Xalkori

Xalkori (crizotinib) treats adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for ALK or ROS1 gene changes, as confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Xalkori is also used for pediatric patients (age 1 and older) and young adults with relapsed or refractory systemic ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), and for adult and pediatric patients (age 1 and older) with unresectable, recurrent, or refractory ALK-positive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT). Xalkori's safety and effectiveness in older adults with relapsed or refractory ALK-positive ALCL have not been established.
