Here's the thing to keep in mind with Fosamprenavir (Lexiva) and coffee charcoal. Like other charcoal-type products, this supplement has a porous surface that can grab onto medications sitting in your gut. If it binds your fosamprenavir before your body absorbs it, less of the drug gets into your bloodstream. With an HIV medication, that's a real concern, because lower drug levels can mean the virus isn't kept in check the way it should be.

The good news is this is based on how charcoal behaves in general, not on direct studies, so it's a theoretical worry. The simple fix is timing: keep coffee charcoal and your fosamprenavir at least two hours apart. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them, and never skip or change your HIV doses on your own.

About Fosamprenavir

What Is Fosamprenavir Used For?

Brand names: Lexiva, Telzir

Fosamprenavir tablets (sold as Fosamprenavir Calcium and Lexiva) are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children as young as 4 weeks old. It is not used alone — it is always part of a combination regimen.

For adults who have already taken protease inhibitor medicines before, fosamprenavir is used alongside a low dose of ritonavir. Once-daily dosing with ritonavir is not recommended for adults who have previously used protease inhibitors, or for any pediatric patients.
