Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the key thing to know: coffee charcoal acts like a sponge in your gut. Because it has that porous, charcoal-like surface, it can grab onto medicines you swallow and keep them from being fully absorbed. Glasdegib (Daurismo) is a pill you take by mouth, so taking it too close to coffee charcoal could mean less of the drug actually gets into your body.

That matters because glasdegib is a cancer treatment, and getting a lower dose than intended could make it work less well against your leukemia. This concern is based on how charcoal behaves in general, not on a study of these two together, so it's more theoretical than proven. To stay safe, separate them by at least a couple of hours, and please check with your oncology team or pharmacist before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Glasdegib page

“Grapefruit is the first thing I would take off the table for anyone on glasdegib (Daurismo), a targeted pill for acute myeloid leukemia. It can push glasdegib levels up because the drug is cleared by the CYP3A4 enzyme, and 121 of the 146 ingredients touch that pathway, some raising its level and others, like St.”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.

It is used specifically in adults who are 75 years of age or older, or in adults of any age whose other health conditions make intensive induction chemotherapy too risky.

Daurismo is not used alone. It is always given together with low-dose cytarabine, a separate chemotherapy medicine, as part of a 28-day treatment cycle.
