Because of its porous, charcoal-like surface, it can grab onto medicines you swallow and keep them from being fully absorbed. If you take it too close to your nortriptyline, less of your dose may actually reach your bloodstream.

For an antidepressant, that mostly matters over time. Nortriptyline needs steady levels to lift mood, so blunting absorption could make it work less well and let symptoms creep back. To play it safe, keep coffee charcoal and nortriptyline at least two hours apart. This concern is based on how charcoal behaves, not strong patient studies, so don't panic. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
